Part 8: Starting a Business Series (A Case Example)
When you’re starting a business, you need a good solid website, you need to blog, and you need to be on social. Though all those things are important, you’ll find that email is the most critical piece of the puzzle, hands down. Why?
Email is your conversion instrument. If you hope to sell anything, email is your avenue. That means that all of your marketing activities should focus on getting people to willingly subscribe. And with the new regulations (GDPR) in Europe, this permission is more important than ever.
Given that most people use their inbox as a to-do list, the permission to email someone is extremely high-level access. This means that you have a responsibility not to abuse the privilege.
So how do you balance all this in building your email list? That’s the topic of Episode 129 of Marketing Without the Marketing – listen here or in your favorite podcast app.
- The downloads that I mentioned come in my Content Strategy Tools & Templates (free when you subscribe).
- All these worksheets, templates, and checklists also come with the free online course, How to Start a Business: A Case Example. This course is the video versions of the episodes in this podcast series!
- In the episode, I mention another online course called CreateBiz: Content Marketing for Creatives, which I created with Dave Kusek. There are 7 full lessons on email strategies, including advanced topics such as segmentation and automation – including a ton of templates to get you off the ground. I like to help. I do that for free in my podcast and blog to help small business owners of all types, including writers and other artists. If you are able, fuel my efforts with a cup of coffee! I could use another one right about now!

My name is Jimmy and I am the content manager for My Speed Reading which is a speed reading website. I have been exploring reading and educational courses websites and came across your site end read “Building Your Email List”.
I was wondering if you ever have guest bloggers contribute to your site? If so, would love you to consider a piece of mine. I have a few banked up as yet that I could share with you, or if you have a particular subject you may want written on I am more than happy to research it and write one for your website (free of charge; I do not expect payment). I am a speed reader myself and am extremely passionate about the field of speed reading.
Looking forward to your reply.

Hi Jimmy, thank you for your query. I accept guest bloggers from time to time. It’s especially valuable when a guest blogger can cover something that is outside my area of expertise – see for example: How an Exit Strategy Can Help Build Your Business Now. Feel free to make a pitch for something specific if you like. My readers are small business owners, including writers and other creatives.
