In running a modern marketing program, it seems like it’s time to abandon a term that came straight out of the “desktop publishing” era. Especially for one of our most important activities: Email marketing. Let’s come up with a new term together.

I think you’ve opened up a big topic- and possibly a big can of worms- so thank you. The bigger picture might be that folks don’t want to read those e-letters much at all these days… we’ve gotten e-mail phobic. I have many friends who say “I don’t read my e-mails… I didn’t see your announcement because I have 2,000 e-mails now”… I wonder what’s the equivalent of an Instagram audio only- something like a thirty second micro-mini podcast to say “here are my concerts coming up this month… check out the home page of my website for more details…” and “here’s a snippet of a song I’m working on”- all under 30 seconds. What do you think?

Hi Mary, thanks for responding. I think you’re on to two great things here: 1) doing something unexpected to generate interest, and 2) keeping it incredibly short to respect people’s time.
There used to be a great medium for this type of short audio called Anchor (it was kind of “Twitter for audio”) until Spotify purchased it last year and is using it more as a podcasting platform. But no reason that you couldn’t do it with another platform like Soundcloud – or with short video using YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok.
Either way – this instinct to be SHORT is a good one. And if you can, offer something they can’t get elsewhere. Song previews or other behind-the-scenes content are great for fans.

Thanks for the info. And thanks for underscoring the need to be short. Can’t hear that often enough!
