This one hit home. Retired from another life 7 years ago to focus on my music – songwriting, composing. This also involved a huge learning curve that is still going on. Have released 7 albums/EPs, numerous singles and dozens of YouTube videos. All as an independent artist doing almost all aspects myself, learning as I go. My hardest challenges are in the promotion end – social media, writing bios. I can make the music. Its the other stuff – the business end – that gets me down, and is often the last to get done. I listened to many of your Marketing without Marketing podcast episodes. Your layered approach is powerful. Content marketing is important. I never produce anything – written, video or music – without thinking about repurposing it down the line. As a former educator I really like your calm, walk-the-talk approach.
Oh, btw, love your story about finding the guitar of your dreams in a store in Canada and how the sales person was honest and told you about a flaw in it.

In addition to the promotion (which is soul-sapping), there’s also the admin stuff too – rights & royalties (ASCAP, SoundExchange, MLC), distribution & publishing (ISRCs, UPCs). I taught myself this over the past few months too – it made me feel dumb that I wasn’t up on it. I’m glad I learned it, but still… what a drag. I just want to write, perform, and record.
