Pinterest is different than other social media platforms. While other platforms are about connecting, Pinterest functions more like a “personal utility.” People use Pinterest to collect – it’s a scrapbook. They collect ideas about event planning, remodeling projects, recipe ideas, travel planning, and other things that might spark inspiration.
Why does this matter? For businesses, it means that there’s potentially more alignment with the consumer’s goals. Potential customers are already in “consideration mode,” which means that they might be more receptive to hearing about your relevant solution. Add this to the fact that Pinterest is image-focused, and you have a platform that fits in very well with selling a product.
Now, of course, you have to do this with a soft touch. The principles of content marketing still apply – you need to have the right message, delivered to the right person, with the right timing. But Pinterest at least offers a more “natural” or “native” environment for this type of connection.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have your message welcomed instead of avoided? Pinterest can be really conducive to that, if you use it right. Listen to Episode 123 here or in your favorite pod player to see why Pinterest deserves another look.
Show Notes
For more about using Pinterest for business, here’s a “starter strategy” to get you up and running – including using Pinterest’s ads and analytics. It’s Episode 63 of this podcast: Pinterest for Business: Are You Missing an Opportunity?
In this episode, I quote from John Batelle’s article called, “Pinterest’s Third Way.” John gives a deeper dive than I do in this episode, including an interview with Pinterest CEO and co-founder Ben Silbermann.
It’s no secret that Facebook is facing massive issues. Mark Zuckerberg faced two days of congressional hearings last week, and has pledged to “fix” Facebook. I’ve covered this topic a lot in this podcast; here’s my take on why his plan won’t work – and what it means to small businesses like yours and mine.
As I mentioned in the episode, I’m in the middle of a series about Starting a Business – a case example of my own experience. Last episode was about finding mentors and models, and the next episode is about testing your initial assumptions – and using social media to do some of that.
Subscribe here (and select podcast / every new post) if you’d like to be notified as soon as new episodes in this series are available. I publish about every other Monday.
I offer a bunch of free help with content marketing in my podcast and blog for small business owners of all types, including writers, musicians, and other creatives. If you are able, fuel my efforts with a cup of coffee!
