Producing a Podcast: Pros and Cons

Learn how to start a business in this case example / podcast series from Michael Boezi, Control Mouse Media, LLC.

Part 7: Starting a Business Series (A Case Example)

Have you ever thought about starting a podcast? It’s a great way to connect with an audience and showcase your expertise.

Though it’s been around for over 10 years, podcasting in 2018 is very different than it was in the past. According to TechCrunch, “The U.S. podcasting industry had a record year in 2017, reaching $314 million in revenue,” estimating that “podcast revenue will see triple-digit 110 percent growth between 2017 and 2020.”

Starting a business podcast in particular is worthwhile, as the same article lists “Business” as one of the “top four content genres.” The top genre is “Arts & Entertainment,” which is great for those who are podcasting about books, music, or movies.

But before you jump on the podcasting bandwagon, let’s take a look at the criteria in making a decision that’s right for your business. That’s the topic of Episode 128, which you can listen to here or in your favorite pod player.

Show Notes

As I mentioned in the episode, the launch is critical when producing a podcast. With a blog, you can just start posting. This is not the case with a podcast, if you want it to be successful. I have an entire episode devoted to my experience after I hit the 50-episode mark: Launching a Podcast: How to Get to 50 Episodes.

At the end of the episode I talked about my concept of The Service Disposition, which is central to succeeding in today’s marketing.

The TechCrunch article I mentioned above: US podcast ad revenues hit record $314 million in 2017. “The top four content genres, out of the 14 measured, generated over half the advertising revenue in 2017. These were: Arts & Entertainment (17%), Technology (15%), News/Politics/Current Events (13%), and Business (11%).”
